I must admit it, Ive cheated on that one !! I couldnt get the hot water smoke to be dense enought for it to show in the picture. So, after about 50 pictures, I gave up and used an incent stick instead.
Altough I am happy with the results, I have decided that I will re-shoot this one later with hot water/cofee steam instead.
Cup was placed on a table in total darkness. Camera settings where 6 seconds exposure at f/16 ISO 100.
I have painted with light manually with an external flash, at 1/128 of its power, smoke and interior of the cup during the exposure time. I fired the flash 5 or 6 times during the exposure.

Hot water and coffee steam are so difficult to capture because they're so faint and delicate so it was probably a better idea to have used the incense sticks. To tell you the truth, I never actually noticed the difference until you had stated that you cheated. XD
Overall, I love this. Very bold and ensnaring. Steam and smoke in photography have always captivated a mysterious and old 50's look, at least for me. The grandeur of the black background is amazing with the contrast of the cup and the smoke.
Why not try a reverse? Black cup and black smoke/steam on white background? I wonder which would have a larger impact to the eye....
cause I`m like a cup of coffee: if you look straight, you`ll see only steam, you should look inside))) And the connection between me & this shot is strong *as for me*. I felt it fron the first look. And one more reason: I like coffee and I want to think, that it is in the cup ^__^
